Amazon Error: GTIN Conflicts with Existing ASIN

  • This Amazon error occurs when the UPC, EAN, or GTIN you enter is already tied to an existing ASIN in Amazon’s internal POS system.
  • In most cases, this happens because you listed the product previously or another seller illegally used your barcode.
  • Your Bar Codes Talk GTINs are GS1-origin, globally unique, and never reassigned—illegal usage on Amazon does not affect your use anywhere else.
  • Amazon does not purge “tomb-stoned” listings, which is why GTIN conflicts can persist even after violating sellers are suspended.

Amazon Error Message:

  • "The value '' specified cannot be used as it conflicts with the value 'MPN#' for ASIN 'ASIN#' in the Amazon catalog."

Amazon Error Code:

  • 5461?

Explanation

While this error appears to reference the Manufacturer Part Number, it actually indicates a GTIN conflict. This means Amazon detects that the UPC/EAN/GTIN you entered is already attached to a different ASIN.

This happens in one of two ways:

  1. You already listed a product using that UPC/EAN/GTIN.
  2. Another seller illegally listed products using your unique UPC/EAN/GTIN.

Amazon is aware that GTIN duplication occurs due to how their private catalog and automated matching system works. Amazon-approved workarounds may apply depending on the case.

Important Notes

The UPC/EAN/GTIN you purchased from Bar Codes Talk has never been reassigned, reused, or sold to anyone other than you. We do not recycle barcode numbers under any circumstances.

Amazon does not remove listings created by sellers who illegally used another seller’s barcode. These abandoned or suspended listings become what Amazon calls “tomb-stoned listings.”

If Amazon previously tied your GTIN to an illegal ASIN, the GTIN will continue conflicting until Amazon manually intervenes.

Illegal usage on Amazon does not impact your barcode’s validity anywhere else globally. Amazon is one of the only platforms that ignores GTIN ownership when accepting seller uploads, causing these issues.

Solution(s):

For “You already listed a product with that UPC/EAN/GTIN”

  • Use the next unused barcode number we provided. Do not reuse barcode numbers for different ASINs moving forward.

For “Another seller has illegally listed products using your unique UPC/EAN/GTIN.”

Amazon does not give sellers or providers visibility into which ASIN is causing the conflict. Because of this, Bar Codes Talk must manually check your GTINs. This process typically takes 1–3 business days.

To expedite your case, email the following information to contactus@barcodestalk.com:

  • Your Confirmed Order Number from Bar Codes Talk
  • Your Manufacturer Name(s) used on Amazon
  • A screenshot of the issue
  • A list of which barcode(s) from your order were able to be used successfully
    (Missing information may delay resolution.)

After our manual review, you will receive one of the following:

  1. Assistance resolving the issue so your original GTINs can be used on Amazon.
  2. Replacement barcodes (free of charge) that Amazon will accept.
  3. A prorated refund for GTINs Amazon will not accept (Your original GTINs still remain yours forever and are usable everywhere else.)

Note: Bar Codes Talk continuously works with Amazon in an attempt to improve GTIN handling and prevent these errors in the future.

We appreciate your patience as we help resolve this Amazon-specific issue.

Why doesn’t Amazon fix this?

The seller using your GTIN illegally committed the violation, not Amazon. Amazon may penalize them, but they do not remove or purge the illegal ASIN, allowing the conflict to persist indefinitely.
