Amazon Error: “The validity of a Product ID is checked against the GS1 GEPIR and ISBN.org databases…”

  • This message appears when Amazon displays its automated GTIN warning during product creation.
  • It is not new—Amazon has always recommended renting GTINs from GS1, especially after joining the GS1 Board in 2016.
  • Amazon does not enforce this requirement except for Brand Registry users.
  • Legally owned GS1-USA pre-2002 GTINs from Bar Codes Talk remain valid and acceptable for standard Amazon listings.

Amazon Error Message:

  • "The validity of a Product ID is checked against the GS1 GEPIR and ISBN.org databases. If your Product ID is not registered with GS1 then the linked ASIN will be suppressed and it may result in removal of your product creation privileges."

Amazon Error Code:

Amazon GEPIR Warning

Explanation

This warning is simply Amazon restating its preference that sellers rent GTINs directly from GS1. This preference increased when Amazon joined the GS1 Board of Governors in 2016.

At this time, Amazon does not enforce this rule on standard sellers. It is only enforced within Amazon’s exclusive Brand Registry program.

However, Amazon—as a private platform—can choose to manually scrutinize individual seller accounts at its discretion, regardless of legal GTIN ownership.

Solution

Check the “Don’t show this again” option and click “Got it”. Continue listing your product normally.

In our experience, there has been no evidence of active enforcement affecting sellers who use legally owned GS1-compliant GTINs from Bar Codes Talk.

Note: Amazon does enforce this requirement specifically for Brand Registry sellers. See details here: Exceptions to GTIN usage on Amazon
